Case Study: Enhancing Derby Arboretum’s Sports Facilities

Client: Derby City Council

Project Location: Derby Arboretum

Project Type: Sports Court Fencing Replacement

Procurement Method: Competitive Tender

Scope of Works

The project aimed to rejuvenate the fencing systems surrounding sports facilities at Derby Arboretum to enhance safety, durability, and aesthetic appeal. The following works were carried out:

  1. Sports Courts Fencing Replacement:

  2. Removed old and deteriorated fencing systems surrounding two AstroTurf football pitches and a Tarmac MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area).

  3. Installed a CLD Dulok Double Wire Panel System, featuring a partial rebound system (to 1.2m high) for added durability and functionality.

  4. All fencing was finished in RAL6005 green to complement the park’s natural surroundings.

  5. Cricket Nets Fencing Replacement:

  6. Replaced the failed cricket net fencing with a CLD Dulok Dual Rebound Panel System, providing robust and long-lasting protection for the area.

  7. Gate Upgrades:

  8. Retrofitted existing gates with new cladding to match the fencing system, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic while minimizing costs.

Challenges and Solutions

  1. Public Safety in a Busy Park Environment:

With the Arboretum being a public space, ensuring the safety of park users during construction was paramount. The team employed:

    • Secure material storage in Derby City Council’s storage area.

    • Gradual transportation of materials to the work area to minimize site clutter.

    • Temporary protective fencing around active work zones.

  2. Tree Root Protection:

The proximity of mature trees required careful planning to avoid damage. Collaboration with Derby City Council’s Landscape and Arboricultural Officers led to the use of suitable trackway matting to protect roots while maintaining access for equipment and personnel.

  3. Time Sensitivity:

One football pitch needed to be completed in time for half-term school holiday tournaments. Strategic scheduling and resource allocation ensured the pitch was ready without compromising quality.

Key Outcomes

  1. Client Satisfaction: Derby City Council provided positive feedback throughout the project, highlighting the smooth execution and adherence to agreed timelines.

  2. Community Approval: Park users frequently commented on the professionalism of the team and the improved appearance and functionality of the facilities.

  3. Minimal Snagging: Sign-offs occurred promptly at each project stage, reflecting the high standards maintained throughout.

Project Highlights

  1. The use of RAL6005 green fencing harmonized the installations with the park’s natural aesthetic.

  2. Proactive collaboration with Derby City Council officers ensured environmentally sensitive practices were followed, particularly concerning mature tree preservation.

  3. Quick turnaround times enabled the timely completion of key areas, supporting community events and activities.
