Wired Fire Alarm Systems: Are They Right For You?

At KCS Projects, we can provide both wired and wireless fire alarm systems to suit your needs.

Wired alarm systems offer several key benefits, including:

  • Reliability - Wired fire alarm systems are mains powered and come equipped with a battery backup that will supply power in the event of a system failure. This makes them more reliable than a wireless system, which does not have a source of backup power.

  • Consistent Connections - Wireless fire alarm systems use radio frequencies, which can present the risk of signal disruptions and interference. This can mean that you may be unprotected if your signal fails for any reason. Wired systems, on the other hand, are hardwired, meaning that your alarm system will have a consistent connection at all times.

  • No Need For Batteries! - Wireless fire alarm systems generally need their batteries replaced every six months. A wired fire alarm system, however, does not use batteries and therefore will not require them to be replaced.

  • Spare Parts - Wired fire alarm systems are more common than wireless fire alarm systems. This means that it is easier and cheaper to source spare parts.

However, there are some circumstances in which a wireless fire alarm may be more suitable for your organisation. Some drawbacks of wired fire alarms include:

  • Installation Costs - While a wired fire alarm system is more cost-effective in itself, they are usually more expensive to install than a wireless system. This is because installing a wired alarm system usually involves running wiring through walls and ceilings to prevent trip hazards and unsightly wires. This results in higher initial expenses due to the costs of labour, equipment, and cabling.

  • Less Flexible - If your wired fire alarm system needs to be reconfigured, these wires will need to be moved. This means that a fire professional will need to re-enter the walls and ceilings to gain access to the wires. This could present significant disruptions to your organisation, and incur additional costs.

  • Permanent Installation - If you choose a wired fire alarm system, you cannot take the system with you if you move.

  • Exposed Wires - While your security professional will conceal as many wires as possible in the walls and ceiling of your property, there may be some circumstances where this is not possible. Exposed wires can be unsightly - and more worryingly, can present a trip hazard, which may be dangerous in an emergency.

  • Older Properties - Wired fire alarm systems are more compatible with new build properties, as it is easier to place wires in the building structure. For older properties, wireless fire alarm systems may be more appropriate.

Maintenance

Regardless of whether you choose a wired or wireless fire alarm, your system will require routine maintenance by a qualified fire safety professional under the BS 5839 fire safety standard.

These checks should be carried out every six months. If you have any questions regarding whether a wired or wireless fire alarm system is more appropriate for your premises, get in touch with our expert team on 01234 230690.

Wired Intruder Alarm Systems: Are They Right For You?

We provide both wired and wireless intruder alarm systems to suit our clients’ security needs. Wired intruder alarm systems offer several key benefits, including:

  • Cost-Effective Maintenance - Similar to wired fire alarm systems, the majority of the cost of a wired intruder alarm system comes from the initial installation. However, following installation, wired intruder alarms are more cost-effective to maintain, due to the availability of reasonably priced spare parts.

  • Easy Maintenance - After the initial installation, wired intruder alarms are generally easier to maintain than wireless versions, requiring minimal maintenance.

  • Reliability - Like wired fire alarm systems, wired intruder alarms do not need wireless connectivity to work. This means they are not affected by signal disruptions or interference. Not only does this mean that you have a consistent connection, but it also eliminates the risk of hackers interfering with radio signals to gain access to your property.

  • Security - Wired intruder alarm systems are secured using a heavy-duty metal case and lock. Some wired alarm system models also include a keypad control panel that can be concealed in a secure area. These features make it almost impossible for an intruder to tamper with your alarm system.

  • Consistent Power Supply - Wired intruder alarm systems are hardwired to mains power, and come equipped with a backup power system, meaning that they will not run out of power. This ensures your property is protected from intruders 24/7.

  • Versatility - Wireless intruder alarm systems can be configured by a security professional to use wireless sensors, making them highly versatile.

However, in some circumstances, a wireless system may be more appropriate for your property. Drawbacks of a wired intruder alarm system include:

  • Installation Costs - Just as with a wired fire alarm system, the cost of installing a wired intruder alarm system can be expensive to install, as it requires gaining access to the wall and ceiling cavities to conceal the wires.

  • Permanent Installation - You cannot take a wired intruder alarm with you if you move properties.

  • Cannot Be Controlled Remotely - One of the benefits of using a wireless intruder alarm system is that you can easily control a wireless system using a mobile app. With a wired system, however, a member of staff will need to be on-hand at all times to disable the intruder alarm system in the event of a false alarm.

  • Exposed Wires - Our professionals will conceal as many wires as possible in the walls and ceilings of your property. However, it may not be feasible to hide all the wires, and those left in the open can cause a trip hazard and look unsightly.

  • Telephone Lines - Wired intruder alarms depend on telephone lines to function. This means an intruder may be able to deactivate your intruder alarm system by cutting the telephone line.

Maintenance

You will need to have your intruder alarm maintained by a qualified security professional at least once a year. However, if your intruder alarm is monitored, you will need to have it maintained once every six months.
